How to Learn to Build Websites

I’ve always considered myself pretty techie and always looking to get my hands on the latest gadgets. I remember I build my first website using HTML back in the day..maybe about 20 years ago (I’m telling my age.) Then, I discovered WordPress and fell in LOVE!!

I’m going to share some of the BEST WordPress training with you. I consider them to be the best because this is the exact training that I took advantage of when I was “upping” my WordPress game and what I still reference today (when needed) when I am building website for clients.

One of the first things you’ll have to do is purchase hosting. There are many hosting companies out there but I am going to recommend my provider, HostGator. I like HostGator because they have 24/7 support, they have proven to be reliable, they are easy to use and affordable. You’ll see other recommendation is the training listed below but it’s up to you to do your own due diligence.

My Recommendations:

  1. Free 5 Day Website Challenge by my WP-BFF Shannon Mattern
  2. Website by the Weekend by Angela Wills, the Laptop Lifestyle Blogger
  3. The VA School by the Techie Mentor, Susan Mershon offers Basic and Advanced WordPress training in addition to other techie skills that are must haves in this fast growing industry

Getting Paid to Build Websites

Seasoned web designers usually get paid several thousand dollars to build one website. When you’re just getting started however, you may want to aim a bit lower for your first few sites as you building up your skills and portfolio. Perhaps you’ll find your work through friends and family.

There are many places online to find potential clients and many places offline where you can meet people who might need a website. As always, do your due diligence.

Once you have several sites to showcase to potential clients, you can start raising your prices. Over time, you’ll develop a loyal following of clients and past clients who’ll continually send you work and referrals.

Learning to build websites isn’t the complex technical process a lot of people think it is. All you really need is the willingness and time and put in the effort. The first couple of tries may look quite plain, which is perfectly okay. In just a month or two of practice, you’ll be able to create some very high-quality websites. You may even shock yourself and make some cash while doing it!
